Afternoon Snack: Fried Rice-a-la Nick
Fried Rice-a-la Nick. Rice and hot dogs. Can’t go wrong.
It is an Asuncion creation. When I was young, I was a picky eater. I loved very few and very simple things. Fried Rice-a-la Nick is a tradition I perfected after my father used to make fried rice for me. Using random food that we had at home, years and years of practice lead to the greatest meal ever. Obviously, I’m not a picky eater anymore, but I’ll never change this recipe. If you are a fried rice fan, add eggs or veggies to this dish. You never go wrong with fried rice.
Prep time: 1-2 hours (depending on rice)
Cook time: 15-20 mins
Ingredients: 3 cups of long grained white rice (preferably jasmine)*
4 cups of water*
3 hot dogs links ( Old Fashioned Schweigert)
1 can of Vienna sausage
1 bottle of soy sauce (sorry, I dont measure soy sauce out, but I can assure you, that you dont use a full bottle of it)
1 tablespoon of garlic powder
1 tablespoon of pepper
1 tablespoon of oil
* Making rice could use different water/rice ratio.
Cook rice first. Once made, chill immediately for 1 hour. In large wok (or saucepan), on med heat, combine oil pepper and garlic. Slice Vienna sausages and hot dogs in to tiny pieces. Fry meats in Wok. Once meat browned, set temperature on low and combine rice in wok. When rice and meats are evenly distributed, add preferred amount of soy sauce for flavoring and color. Heat until rice is warmed then serve.
